I have seen a certain runner for weeks and months while training for Napa. We always shout "Morning" to one another as we pass. This morning, I decided to try for 4 miles as my legs are feeling pretty good. I went on the route where I normally see him, and sure enough....saw him approaching. Except this time he asked me....."I have to ask.....are you in training? What are you training for?"
As we passed I told him I just ran Napa on Sunday, and managed to qualify for Boston and he says to me....."I am headed to Boston in April!"
That was enough for both of us to stop our watches and chat.
Turns out Larry is a 50-year-old runner and qualified by 15 SECONDS at the CA International Marathon in December. He told me his story of being at first let down when he crossed as his finish time was 2 minutes, 30 seconds slower than qualifying time.....but his official chip time put him in the qualifying range.....and he is going.
It was nice to put a name to the face I saw so many mornings and share our stories.
