The End of an Era

Tomorrow night we gather to celebrate the End of an Era.

Engineer Horning will officially leave his post of over 20 years as a

Fireman for Elk Grove Fire Department.

There is something to be said about being the child of a Fireman.

To us, our Dad was a Hero.

The one who showed up when there was danger or an emergency.

He called every night to see how we were when he couldn't come home.

He used his days off to take us on special trips.

He made sure we had emergency plans in order at home.

He made sure we knew what to do in case of trouble.

I'm not so sure I ever thanked him...

If you have never been thanked for every call,

Please let me thank you for those who never did,

I understand only too well just what those words mean,

I've known since I was a kid.

I watched my Dad come home after what seemed like weeks in a child's eyes

when he was away,

Sometimes he seemed let down or sad about what he saw at work some days.

There is no greater

Hero to me than my Dad and the life he chose to live,

I know the sacrifices families make and just how much to others Firemen really give.

I ♥ you Dad and am so proud and excited for you in your retirement!
