I did something a little crazy today. I registered for my first 50K. I am attempting a leap from a run of the mill marathoner to an ultramarathoner. For at least 2 years the "Runner's World" article titled, 'What's Next-a Beginner's Guide to Ultramarathons' has lied neatly in my bedroom side table. I look at it now and then and wonder to myself if I could really do that.....
I gaze longingly at the articles every year about the various ultramarathons and wonder to myself if I have what it takes.
10 weeks ago I looked up from the ground during an attempted 20-mile run watching the sky change from dark blue to a beautiful orange-pink wondering if this was the end of running for me. I am feeling incredibly happy to be coming out of this injury and humbly timid on my runs.
Helen Klein is a running legend in the area and it has been really cool to learn about this amazing woman. She holds the WORLD RECORD in the marathon for age 80-84 which she set right here at CIM in 2002. Check out her story here. The ultramarathon friends I have been consulting say both she and her husband will be at the race and it will be pretty cool to be in the company of a world record holder!
August 9th marks day one of my 12-week training plan......until then......
in the words of Neil Young (and our good running friend, Larry)
