With Liberty and Justice....FOR ALL

Ok, so I do not usually talk/post about political stuff. This political season I work with two people are rather strong in their beliefs and are constantly pushing their agendas. So, I am finding I really need an outlet, and with Chris gone all week.....I need to vent.

The one issue that is really irking me is Proposition 8. For those of you not in California, this proposition regards the legality of same-sex marriages. If the Proposition passes, same-sex marriages will not be recognized in California and the inverse is true if it fails.

So, on my run this morning I was brain storming about all the things that are bothering me:

1) I for one, did NOT learn about marriage in school. I learned from my parents, observations, stories, movies, etc. More than anything one of the first things a child learns is what LOVE is. Well before they are in any school they know (hopefully) that there are at least 2 people who dearly love them.

2) I understand that homosexuality is not supported by the Bible and thus the reason why many religious groups oppose same-sex marriage. However, isn't adultery wrong in the bible? Isn't crime wrong in the bible? So.....you mean to tell me that people who commit a crime or have an affair deserve rights and protection under the law, but not those who want to celebrate their love for one another?

3) I have to scratch my head when the argument about a child raised by a same-sex couple and the plight of that child comes up. I know SEVERAL people who had happily married parents who ended up being "bad kids/adults" and SEVERAL people who had "bad parents" that turned out to be "good kids/adults". Bad and good parenting is all around us, married, divorced, hetero, homo.....it's everywhere.

4) Imagine going to the hospital after a call that your spouse has been injured....on the job, in a wreck....whatever.....and being told that under the law (although you are married) you have no right to see them or make any medical decisions on their behalf. Imagine the helplessness you might feel. Imagine that they do not survive.....and you have no LEGAL rights to protect yourself, your home, your children by assuming the financial control of their estate.

No matter what you believe about marriage.....for whatever reason.....this should be about the law and not about personal beliefs.
