Balancing your checkbook

I will never forget talking with my Dad about life.
He usually took a complicated issue and made it simple.
When it came to money, "you've got to spend less than you make".
When it came to diet/weight-loss/exercise, "output has to be higher than input".
When it came to relationships, "You've got to make deposits in the emotional bank account".
It made perfect sense.
Then, there was the simple one word answer.....
Mod-er-ation.
He even made it sound different than other words or ideas.
As I went off to grad school and started clinicals and finally a residency....I was shocked.
Several of my mentors and professors where using a similar analogy.
When it came to rehab and recovery...
"You've got to make deposits in the account (body), if you don't....you'll be overdrawn(injury)"
This morning while running, I couldn't stop thinking about MY bank account.
I thought about what I have been doing differently to try to make deposits...ice bath, rest days, protein shakes, hydrating and fueling smarter, changing mechanics, running on trails.
In May, my bank grew so tired of my negligence and over-drafts, it closed my account.
The last 14 weeks I have been making withdrawls. I've asked my bank to trust that I will make deposits during the final 3 weeks; I will rest, hydrate, taper, slow down, rest, eat, hydrate, rest...
Well you get the idea.
For 30 years Dad was teaching me the simple lesson I will continue to use forever....
You've got to deposit than you spend.
